In 2008, the U.S. Supreme Court made it harder for women (and other workers) to file claims against their employers seeking equal pay that was denied on the basis of discriminatory practices. But on January 29, 2009, President Barack Obama signed his first bill into law; the S. 181 Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009 (also known As: H.R. 2831 - Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2007 and H.R. 11 Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009).

After President Obama signed the bill into law, Mrs. Obama hosted a reception for Lilly Ledbetter, now age 70, and more than 50 advocates of women's causes and civil rights.
