Readers Respond: Should Liddy Get Away With His Rude Comments About Judge Sotomayor?

G. Gordon Liddy made inexcusable remarks on nationwide radio about Judge Sonia Sotomayor insinuating a woman's menstrual cycle affects her judgment. Specifically, Liddy stated:
"Let's hope that the key conferences aren't when she's menstruating or something, or just before she's going to menstruate. That would really be bad. Lord knows what we would get then."

The shameful comments were syndicated by Radio America on May 28, 2009 prompting outrage by the National Organization of Women.

What do you think of his comments and should he apologize to women? Share Your Experience

Go G. Gordon

Let the menopause Judge apologize for castration remarks first, set the example for a change.

Men get PMS too

I know some guys who are as rude as anyone can be and they don't have ovaries... It is called IPO... lol You figure that one out!!!

Um, what?

Who says stuff like that on radio? Or really, anywhere? Get some class, Liddy! Yes, she may be menstruating, but I'm sure as a Judge, she'd have trained herself to be fair and impartial no matter how she feels.

Fact v. Fiction

Liddy's comments--while not polished--are scientifically true; if Ms. Sotomayor is not menopausal. The whole PMS excuse, has proved to be a double edged sword. Even NBC's Chief Health Correspondent has acknowledged that groups of women who are still menstruating, will cycle together. It comes as no shock to those co-workers who don't interact with those women, that there are times when--quite frankly; very little gets done. Three of the top Female Trial Lawyers I've worked with (They're names are always in the news), will purposely pull jury pools for certain cases based on the menstrual cycles of the potential jury. With a better than 80% record..., you cannot disagree with their logic.

No! This is a put down of women

No, he should not get away with this. This perpetuates a myth, that women’s judgment is suspect and unreliable because of being a woman. For Centuries women could not testify in court because their judgment was suspect. That was also one of the major reasons for denying women the vote, because they were too "emotional" and needed to be guided by men. That men are "clear headed" and "reasonable". Men are just as hormone driven as women but are not penalized for it.

Nice to Know I Have Good Judgment Now

Well, now that I have passed through childbearing years I must be capable of exercising good judgment because I no longer have periods. And, in my post-menstrual years good judgment, the man should be barred from radio. His comments make me sick.

Menstruating Lawyers in His Own Family

Since his wife, Frances Purcell Liddy, came from a lawyer's family I am sure she and his in laws were pleased to hear their own performance in the legal arena is directly tied to menstrual cycles.
