What "Take Your Child to Work Day" is About:
Take Your Child to Work Day is an opportunity to bring your child with you to work. While it is not a national holiday in the United States, many private companies and government agencies participate.
When it Takes Place:
Take Your Child to Work Day is observed the fourth Thursday in the month of April. In 2009, the event falls on Thursday, April 23rd.
When it Began:
The first observance of Take Your Child to Work Day was in 1993.
The Event's Founders:
The Ms. Foundation (a nonprofit organization working to promote women's issues) sponsored the first event.
Why it Was Started:
The original event was called "Take Your Daughter to Work Day." It was established to offer teenage girls exposure to career options and to help build their self-confidence.
The Official Name of the Event:
The event began as National "Take Your Daughter to Work Day," then became "Take Your Child to Work Day." It is now also often referred to as "Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day."
Statistics:
By the year 2000, over 25 million children participated in the event.
Why Work-At-Home Mom's Should Participate:
If you are a work-from-home mom your kids are already with you every day at work. But the intent behind the event is not about companionship. It is about you being a one-day professional mentor for your children. It is about showing them career options and building their self-esteem.
