Video File Formats to Use
Video publishing sites will not take .MSWMM files (the default Windows Movie Maker file extension.) You will need to create or transcode to one of the following formats to be compatible with most major video publishing sites:
- Windows Media Video (.WMV)
- .3gp (cell phones)
- .avi (windows)
- .mov (mac)
- .mp4 (ipod/psp)
- .mpeg
- .flv (adobe flash)
- .mkv (h.264)
It is important that you do not repeatedly transcode file formats. Each time you compress from one file format to another it will slightly degrade the quality of your video.
It is also worth mentioning, for video SEO purposes, that Google crawls the following video file types:
- .asf
- .avi
- .flv
- .mpg
- .mpeg
- .mp4
- .mov
- .ra
- .ram
- .rm
- .wmv
All files must be accessible via HTTP. Metafiles that require a download of the source via streaming protocols are not supported by Googlebot and will not be indexed.
