Definition - Brief (as in "Legal Brief")

Definition: A legal brief is a written statement submitted to the court summarizing a case. A legal brief is almost always prepared by an attorney for a client and in most cases will contain:
  • A summary of the facts in the case;
  • Citations or examples of pertinent laws pertinent to the case; and
  • A written argument demonstrating how the law applies to the facts supporting the client's position.
