Organizations Started by Women to Help Other Women

By , About.com Guide

Women entrepreneurs are significant contributors across many for-profit industries, and they own more than forty percent of all the small privately held businesses in the U.S. But women are the majority of entrepreneurs that start social service and nonprofit organizations in the U.S. Women are also amazingly skilled at building support networks for other women; the number of which far outranks organizations of men helping men.

To introduce you to some of these women-helping-women groups I will be featuring new businesses (started and run by women) that are tops in their field – fields that directly benefit other women.

The following are just a few major organizations created by women, for women:

  • Catalyst: Catalyst is the leading nonprofit membership organization working globally with businesses and the professions to build inclusive workplaces and expand opportunities for women and business.

  • Women in Technology International (WITI): A creative system of networks for business women run by other visionary business women. “WITI's mission is to empower women worldwide to achieve unimagined possibilities and transformations through technology, leadership and economic prosperity.”

  • The Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA): If you think fitness and social club when you hear “YWCA” you’d be conjuring the wrong image. The YWCA is the oldest and largest multicultural women's organization in the world. Their mission is anything but “fitness club: “To eliminate racism and empower women.”
