New BlackBerry Virus Alert

Saturday November 14, 2009

According to an alert published by LifeLock.com, "Some BlackBerry® users could be vulnerable to a new short messaging service (SMS) attack. Hackers are exploiting a vulnerability in the BlackBerry Browser by sending victims a fraudulent, but authentic looking link to a malicious webpage disguised to look like a trusted site. If the user clicks on the link, they may be taken to a site where they could accidentally download viruses or unknowingly provide their personal information to thieves."

In order to protect yourself against virus intrusions via your BlackBerry:

  • Be sure to keep your software updated.  You can download the latest software updates  from www.blackberry.com. (The newest security patch allows you to see hidden characters on the notification window of the BlackBerry® Browser.)
  • Do not open any links in SMS messages unless you are absolutely positive they are to be trusted.  When in doubt: do NOT open!
  • Immediately select "close connection" if you receive a warning that the link you have clicked on does not match the domain you are being sent to.
