In many job fields women are doing quite well; they are starting more business than men, running them better, and now own almost half of all privately held businesses in the United States.
But women are not necessarily doing so well in industries that are seen as traditionally "men's jobs."
In one long-term study (1990-1995), data showed that 2,511 out of 3,200 first-time jobs for new Ph.D. holders in math-related fields went to men -- even though more women than men hold higher degrees.
According to the Department of Labor, in 2007, the fields dominated by women (percent of jobs by profession, held by women) are still largely in industries of care giving, education, and administrative support.
