Answer: For almost a decade, the subject of an Internet sales tax has been hotly debated. The rumors you may be hearing are certainly nothing new, and probably stem from speculation from announcements made in April 2009 that Sen. Mike Enzi, (R-WYO) and Rep. Bill Delahunt, (D-MA) were likely to be introducing a new bill that would require online retailers to collect taxes.
The rumored bill would also require states to notify online retailers of any changes in tax individual state sales tax codes. The bill was to impact online sales and mail order sales from catalogs and phone orders, as well as other non-Internet and in-store sales.
As of July 20, 2009, no such bill has been introduced according to a search on Govtrack.us.
